Slavery and Universities

A group of us are deeply interested in the historical entanglements between universities and chattel slavery. While institutions of higher learning are in many respects figured as utopian spaces, many have historical roots that are deeply embedded in slavery and transnational slave trades. We are fascinated in documenting ongoing efforts to document these largely hidden histories and the impact of these forms of memory work on evolving configurations of social class, race, ethnicity and power relations on campuses.
