"MIRRORS OF SCIENCE AT THE ROSE" Fall 2007

Philosophers have long asked if art is the mirror of nature. But might contemporary art and related cultural practices be conceived of as mirrors of science? Do current processes of experimentation and recombination in the arts "reflect" comparable processes in science and technology? In turn, how might modern forms of "objective" knowledge themselves mirror the aesthetic forms and conventions of the imaginative arts? In conversation with the work of Steve Miller and Tom Sachs, we explore a dizzying hall of mirrors ranging from X-ray crystallography and topological diagrams to high fashion and science fiction.
